CITY STONE
Loft living, London style

When the owner of this apartment in central London decided to refurbish the property before she moved from her home in Sweden, naturally, the young professional turned to Sola Kitchens to make her a beautiful kitchen that would last a long, long time.

The Brief
The kitchen needed to be large and open plan, with as large a pantry as possible, and an American-style fridge-freezer. The design also needed to be adaptable, to accommodate the owner's circumstances as they change in years to come, and she wanted there to be a big, symmetrical feature island that, instead of a dining room, would be suitable for entertaining. She liked the idea of a grey colour scheme to coordinate with her artworks and furnishings, and asked for a style that would be very contemporary look, not traditional Shaker. Last, but not least, as the island is visible from the front door, she wanted to make it a key feature of the open-plan space and requested a stone waterfall treatment.

The designer's solution uses a flat-fronted design in mdf and spray-painted grey with Skog cabinetry in white-pigmented oak, to add warmth and texture, and a magnificent stone waterfall island. The designer took the size of the fridge as her starting point and designed the pantry to match it, with the sizes of the rest of the cabinetry and the size and position of the island following on thereafter. As the existing plumbing could not be adjusted, the sink had to be positioned in the wall run, and to satisfy the owner's desire for perfect symmetry, the hob and undercounter side-by-side ovens were positioned directly opposite, in the island.

Special Features
Evening star: a wash of light from downlights recessed into the frame above the Skog wall cabinets makes the textured surface the room's point of focus in the evenings.
Frame it: in an early version of the design plan, the built-in wall cabinetry was going to be run all the way up to the ceiling, to emphasise the height of the walls, but the top shelves would inevitably have been redundant, even with a stepladder. Instead, once the kitchen was fully installed, a bulkhead was put in across the full length of the wall cabinets and spray-painted grey, creating a box-frame effect that highlights the set-back Skog cupboards perfectly.
