Our Scandinavian Heritage
The term ‘Scandinavian Design’ originated in the 1930’s and has come to exemplify simplicity with an emphasis on improving the quality of daily life through functional and aesthetic design, quality of workmanship and the use of natural materials.
More recently the popularity of the Danish ‘hygge’ in interior design, meaning a feeling of cosiness or contentment, has meant a greater focus on the home as a comfortable source of refuge.
As a Scandinavian herself, Sofia grew up with this design ethos and wanted Sola Kitchens to reflect the same:
- that less is more
- to combine style with perfect functionality
to be completely bespoke and hand-crafted using our wonderful cabinet makers in Sweden and Denmark - to apply attention to the finest details
to follow well-trusted traditional manufacturing techniques - to focus on materiality and the relationship between materials such as wood, stone and paint colours.
How it all started
Sola Kitchens was founded by Sofia Bune Strandh in 2006.
The idea came about when Sofia was looking for a new kitchen for her own flat in central London and she simply could not find the style and high-quality designs and carpentry techniques that she was used to seeing in Scandinavia.
Sofia finally found the perfect company in her native Sweden and was so thrilled with the quality and style of her new kitchen that she gave up her career as a City solicitor to found Sola Kitchens so that others could benefit in the same ways she did.
The idea was to offer a wide range of bespoke options, to ensure that the clients’ every need could be met. A truly bespoke service combined with the highest quality of materials and great craftmanship was key.
Sofia began to work together with the best bespoke cabinet makers in Sweden and Denmark to provide discerning clients in the UK with their dream kitchen, focusing on great design, the very best quality materials and perfect craftmanship.
Sola Kitchens has since grown but the basic idea still remains the same. The tightly knitted team at Sola Kitchens work together to create beautiful and functional designs for our clients!
THE PROCESS
At Sola kitchens we understand how daunting the process of buying and designing a kitchen can be. There are a lot of decisions to make and detailed planning. Buying a kitchen is a big purchase and therefore everything must be perfect. Thankfully, we are here to guide you through every step of the way to ensure the process is smooth and stress free.
We have an experienced team of designers and installers who have an abundance of passion and knowledge when it comes to kitchens. After all, as a company we have successfully designed kitchens for 15 years, so its safe to say, we know what we are talking about.

Sola kitchens was founded by Sofia Bune Strandh in 2006.
Whilst searching for kitchen furniture for her own flat in central London, Sofia had in her mind the high quality cabinets she was used to in her native Sweden. Unable to find just what she wanted in the UK she began a search for a company with the traditional carpentry techniques and designs she was looking for. Having had her kitchen installed, Sofia was so thrilled with the quality and style of her new kitchen that she gave up her career as a solicitor to start Sola Kitchens so that others could also benefit from the pleasure of Scandinavian kitchen furniture. She started working with long established Swedish manufacturer Lidhults, who specialise in bespoke solid wood kitchens and interiors in classic styles.
As her business has grown, Sofia now works with a multitude of different types of craftsman all across Europe who specialise in working with a range of different materials. It is the combination of these high quality materials which make our designs so unique and desirable.
